Our History
From Signal Hill's oil discovery to our centennial celebration, discover the milestones that shaped our community and our Chamber.
The Discovery
On June 23, the Royal Dutch Shell Oil Company hits 'pay dirt' at Alamitos Well #1. Signal Hill transforms overnight from a quiet hilltop of mansions into one of the most productive oil fields in the world.
The City
To avoid annexation and taxation by neighboring Long Beach, the City of Signal Hill officially incorporates on April 22, 1924. Mrs. Jessie Nelson is elected as California's first female mayor.
The Chamber
The Signal Hill Chamber of Commerce is founded. Established just as the U.S. entered WWII, the Chamber began supporting local businesses at a time when Signal Hill's oil fields were producing nearly 15% of the oil California contributed to the Allied war effort.
The Pivot
The Signal Hill Redevelopment Agency is formed. The city—and the Chamber—begins the massive strategic shift from a pure 'oil town' to the diverse commercial hub (Auto Center, retail, residential) that it is today.
The Centennial
Signal Hill celebrates 100 years of resilience, with the Chamber continuing to lead the business community into the next century.
