How to Start a New Direct Message

Open Messages, click New Message, and pick a member. Built on Stream Chat.

Direct messages are the fastest way to reach another chamber member without hunting for their contact info. Conversations happen inside the chamber app — members get notified in-app and via email (see below).

Start a DM

  1. Open Messages.
  2. Click New Message (blue button at the top of the messages panel).
  3. In the modal, search for the member by first name, last name, or company.
  4. Click the member's name. The conversation opens immediately.
  5. Type your message and press Enter (or click Send).

Only active members show up. Future members (people who signed up but haven't paid dues yet) aren't available for DMs.

Message from a member's directory page

Right now you have to start DMs from the Messages tab, not directly from a member's directory page. A Message button on profile pages is on our roadmap.

What the recipient sees

  • A real-time notification in-app if they're signed in.
  • An email alert 15 minutes later if they haven't read it yet (cancels automatically if they open Messages and read it first).
  • If they have DM email notifications turned off, they only get the in-app alert.

Still need help?

If search isn't returning the member you expect, they may be a future member or pending. Contact us and we can confirm their status.
